I had a chance over the Memorial Day weekend to talk to D. Hughes, the man behind the clothing company American Slang Collection. I’ve been witnessing people wearing his shirts everywhere I go and was really interested to get more information on the brand to bring back to the readers of Southern Laced.
Q: What inspired you to create American Slang Collection?
A: I’ve loved fashion and t-shirts since I was 12 years old. So one day I decided to create my own brand to provide for my family and myself.
Q: There’s one shirt you’ve released that I know you probably get a lot of questions about. It says “Blame Mississippi” on the front. Is there a meaning behind that?
A: Just traveling and living in Denver, LA, Houston, Dallas, ATL and Stuttgart, Germany… People never thought I was from Mississippi, so I wanted something for everybody that’s living all over the world to never be afraid to rep Mississippi… Blame Mississippi for our Southern Hospitality, cool ways, good food, good souls, all positive things.
Q: I also noticed you have a shirt with the words “Do Better” on it. Was it important to you when you started your company to do some clothes that provide motivation?
A: Yeah. Growing up in Washington Addition on the west side of Jackson, Mississippi… It’s wild like any other city. I just wanna be one of the guys that the little kids can look up to and say, “I watch Damien change for the better so I can do it too… Do Better”. I’m living proof that if you do right/better you get positive results in return.
Q: That’s dope. Well, I just wanted to get an opportunity to find out more about this company and talk to the man behind it. Seeing is believing and I’ve been seeing the shirts everywhere I go. What’s next for American Slang?
A: Big things coming… I came from that era where we did less talking and more working so stay tuned. I’m working.
Thanks for taking the time to write about the brand homie.
A: That’s what’s up and no problem at all. Thanks for taking the time out to talk with me. (GBoogie the Scorpio)
