Jackson State alumna and expert economist will keynote the fall 2021 commencement

(JACKSON, Miss.) — Jackson State University will host its fall 2021 commencement ceremony on Friday, December 10, at 10 a.m. in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.

Dr. Kristen Broady is an expert economist and Fellow in the Metropolitan Policy Program at The Brookings Institution.

The keynote for the occasion is Dr. Kristen Broady, a JSU alumna and Fellow in the Metropolitan Policy Program at The Brookings Institution.

An expert on economic disparities, labor and automation, Broady has conducted extensive research and policy analysis on the impact of automation on the future of work, the racial wealth gap and fintech innovations. She has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, and her quotes have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Politico and USA Today, among many other noted news outlets. She was also featured in the American international business magazine Fortune as one of 19 Black economists to celebrate and know. 

Broady previously served as a faculty member at Alabama A&M University, Dominican University, Kentucky State University and Fort Valley State University, where she also doubled as the department chair of Business and Economics. The economist was the dean of the College of Business at Dillard University and a visiting faculty member at Jiangsu Normal University in Xuzhou, China.

Broady served as a consultant for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.; a senior research fellow for the Center for Global Policy Solutions in Washington, D.C.; a consultant for the City of East Point, Georgia; and as an HBCU consultant for season two of The Quad on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in Atlanta.

Broady earned a B.A. in criminal justice at Alcorn State University and an M.B.A. and Ph.D. in business administration with a major in economics at Jackson State University. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and The Baltimore (MD) Chapter of The Links, Inc. 

Commencement Day Protocol:

  • This is a non-ticketed event.
  • There will be no processional for graduates.
  • There will be spaced seating among the graduates.
  • Masks will be required throughout the ceremony.
  • Doctoral candidates will be hooded in a separate ceremony.
