Last night, BET Networks presented their first Social Awards. The event focused specifically on social media icons, from Instagram megastars to YouTube creators. Michael Blackson, a Ghanaian-born American actor and comedian, hosted the show, which included nominee categories such as Best Tea, Issa Wave, Social Hustle, LMAO!, Clapback, Best Podcast, Mood AF, and BaeWatch.
An entertaining performance by Titi and Lala kicked off the event, followed by the first category of the night. Erykah Badu presented the award for “Issa Wave” and the award was given to Kash Doll.
The second category of the night, “LMAO!”, was presented by Tony Rock and King Keraun and was awarded to Blameitonkway.
Michael Blackson presented the third category, “Clapback”, and the award was given to Jess Hilarious.
In a particularly poignant moment, Amanda Seales gave an incredible speech on Black Girl Magic and taking pride in Black heritage.
Jess Hilarious presented the award for “Best Tea” to “The Shade Room”.
The next award, Social Verified, was given to DcYoungFly, who skyrocketed through social media via crazy skits and Hollywood roles.
Afterwards, YouTube creators De’Arra and Ken introduced Kash Doll, who performed her hit single “For Everybody,” while looking flawless as ever.
Powerful hashtags have surfaced on our social media platforms and transformed into movements these past few months; #MeToo, #WomensMarch, and #Resist. CNN’s Symone Sanders presented the founders of the Women’s March, Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez, Linda Sarsour, and Bob Bland, with the Social Movement Award.
The last award of the night, Social Hustle, went to my #BestFrannn Kendall Kyndall.
The award show closed out with ATL’s own YFN Lucci.
While the live event did start out a little rough, social media influencers who deserved to be recognized offline dazzled.
