Occupation: Makeup Artist

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: I get my inspiration from things all around me, mainly color! I fall in love with different tones and create mood boards that feature those tones. Making visual mood boards excite me and definitely inspire me.
Q: Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?
A: There are many artists that have inspired me. Pat McGrath definitely does; I loved her work before I knew it was hers. She is a leading makeup artist who does editorial and runway work (which is my interest). Seeing her success as a black woman in an industry that’s dominated by men definitely inspires me.
Q: How long have you been a makeup artist? And how did you get your start in the industry?
A: About three years! I just went for it, honestly. I have no formal training. I always practiced… still practice when I have time. It’s not work at all for me. I’m truly passionate about it.
Q: What do you love most about makeup?
A: I love the feeling of creating on a beautiful canvas. Women are beautiful… facial structure is beautiful. Doing makeup is very relaxing for me.
Q: If you weren’t a makeup artist, what else would you be?
A: A portrait photographer. I’m actually teaching myself photography. The love developed from doing makeup for photo shoot work. It’s my favorite.
Q: How would you describe your signature look? And what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?
A: My signature look is what I call “Nude Glam”. Neutral tones are my favorite. Nudes, champagnes, golds, bronzes, rich browns, etc, etc…. I love creating looks that use tones like these because they keep the focus on the client. I love bright colors, but neutrals speak to me. This look goes beyond just “natural”. I enhance what’s there and add a touch of glam. It is not a carbon copy on my client’s faces. And my clients still look like themselves afterwards. 🙂
Q: What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?
A: No matter how busy you are, incorporate skin care into your everyday routine. Your skin will thank you later!
Q: What are some common beauty mistakes that women make?
A: Thinking less is more. And thinking more is good. I see too many older women that skip beauty products altogether. We loose definition in our eyebrows, eyes, lips (and EVERYWHERE else) as we get older. Using makeup to bring those features back is important. There is a balance though. On the other end of the spectrum, I see women young and older that need to do less. Don’t detract from your beauty, enhance it!
Q: What products do you think should be a staple in every woman’s purse?
A: A lipcolor that can be applied quickly and that brightens your complexion, a great mascara, and a liquid concealer to brighten the undereye!
Q: What’s your favorite makeup brush?
A: I would take the Beauty Blender sponge over any brush if I had the option for just one tool.
Q: What’s your favorite Makeup Forever product?
A: I love Makeup Forever’s HD Foundation Stick!
