Now, back in her home state, she continues to share her passion, inspiring others with her voice and unwavering faith. In this interview, she opens up to Southern Laced about her influences, career, and upcoming performances.
Early Influences & Passion for Music

SL: Can you share your journey into music? What first sparked your passion for singing?
CB: My passion for singing was sparked by my family. Everyone in my family sings, so music was a constant part of my life. I grew up singing with my siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. The Brinson Family was well-known for our musical talent, and as we got older, doors continued to open for us individually and collectively.
Church played a huge role in shaping my gift. It gave me the foundation I needed to develop my voice and confidence. As I moved through different seasons of my life, my journey took me to England for three years, where I had the incredible opportunity to lead thousands in worship under the leadership of Larry Mosley and the Mary Bell Gospel Choir. From there, I spent eleven years in Texas and thirteen years in California, continuing to grow as an artist. I led choirs and worship teams, sang at weddings and funerals, and even had the chance to perform background vocals for Jewel on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. One of my most memorable moments was leading Don’t Play That Song for Me by Aretha Franklin at the Grammy’s after-party. In 2015, I traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, where I led worship during a life-changing conference.
Music has taken me places I never imagined, and I know it’s all part of God’s plan. While worship music is my foundation, I have always embraced multiple genres, knowing that my gift is meant to reach beyond any single space. Whether leading worship or performing in different settings, I find joy in using my voice to inspire others.
Another driving force behind my passion is my children and grandchildren. I want them to see that with God’s help, they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. And I can’t talk about my journey without mentioning my husband, Gary. We celebrated two years of marriage on February 14th, and he is truly the love of my life. He inspires the love songs I sing, and I look forward to growing old with this amazing man.
While worship music is my foundation, I’ve always had a deep love for multiple genres. Music is a gift from God, and I embrace it wholeheartedly, ready to serve at any event where I’m needed.
Musical Influences & Career Growth

SL: Who or what has been your biggest musical influence?
CB: My biggest influence has always been my family. They’ve never been afraid to spread their wings and go after opportunities to share their God-given gifts. Their fearlessness inspired me to step out in faith as well.
My sister, Patrice Morris, and brother, Terrell Brinson are both amazing performers! They created opportunities for me to perform while singing background for them and opened doors for me to perform as well. I’m forever grateful for their support and for always believing in my talent.
Outside of family, I’ve been deeply influenced by artists like Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, Tamela Mann, Anita Wilson, Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills. These women have not only shaped my sound but also shown me what it means to carry yourself with grace and confidence in the music industry.
Catherine B. Smith wrote and arranged the song ‘Rest’ just before her mother’s transition and sang it at her funeral. She hopes to write more songs in the future.
SL: How has music shaped your life and career?
A: Music has been a guiding force in my life. When you find your passion and trust God to open doors, the opportunities are endless. I’ve always been specific in my prayers, asking God to use my gift in ways that glorify Him. And He has continued to do just that.
I love leading worship just as much as I love entertaining. Some people try to put me in a box, but I refuse to stay in one. God gave me the freedom to share my gift in different ways, and I embrace that fully. Whether I’m ushering in God’s presence through worship, spreading joy through R&B and jazz, or singing my way through life’s highs and lows, I am completely fulfilled.
Music has also allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life. At the end of the day, I know I’m walking in my purpose, and that brings me great peace and joy.
The Changing Music Scene & Upcoming Performances

SL: Since COVID, how have live events and festivals evolved? Are attendance and opportunities returning to pre-pandemic levels?
CB: Absolutely! Live events and festivals have made a major comeback. Music is a universal language, and while COVID had its time, people are ready to get back out and enjoy themselves again.
Not everyone will have the opportunity to use their gifts inside the four walls of the church, but that doesn’t mean their talent isn’t from God. Festivals and live performances allow artists to showcase their gifts while also being compensated for their work. It’s a beautiful thing to see music thriving again.

SL: What exciting projects or performances do you have coming up?
CB: I’m so glad you asked! Here’s where you can catch me in the coming weeks:
- Saturday – I’ll be at Burgers Blues Barbecue in Brandon, MS(5-9 PM). Joey Robinson will be playing for me, and I always love this crowd!
- Next Friday Night – The CBS Band and I will be performing at Ameristar Resort and Casino (Bottleneck Blues Bar) in Vicksburg, MS for the second time—it’s going to be an amazing night!
- End of the Month – I’ll be back at Social21 in Jackson, MS for The R&B Brunch Experience—a great way to spend your Sunday afternoon after worship!
- September – I’m heading back to Palm Springs, CA, to join my big sister, Patrice Morris, for another performance. Last year, we had a sold-out show, and we’re back by popular demand!
I’ve also performed at venues like:
- Godfrey’s
- Five Star Lounge, Brandon
- IHG
- Social21
- ISH
- Burgers Blues Barbecue
- Ameristar Casino
Doors are always opening for me, and I truly believe it’s because I asked God, wrote down my vision, and put in the work. The best is yet to come!
Advice & Inspiration

SL: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting in the music industry?
CB: First and foremost, pray about it. Acknowledge God in all your ways, and He will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6). Beyond that:
- Write down your vision. Set clear goals and make a plan.
- Surround yourself with the right people. Not everyone wants to see you succeed, so be discerning about who you trust.
- Put in the work. Faith without action is dead—so start working toward your dreams!
- Speak affirmations daily. Walk in confidence, be patient, and enjoy the process.
And most importantly, your only competition is yourself. Always encourage others along the way. If God placed a gift inside of you, it’s meant to be used!

SL: What’s your favorite quote or scripture, and why does it resonate with you?
CB: Right now, my favorite scripture is Luke 1:45 (NIV):
“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.”
This verse speaks to me because I truly believe in the promises God has for my life. Every performance, every opportunity, and every open door is a testament to His faithfulness.
